Helen Patricia "Pat" Stockton, a beloved educator and cherished member of her community, passed away on March 14, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on December 29, 1937, in Kansas City, MO, to Ralph and Jewel (Heavin) Harrington, Pat’s life was defined by her warmth, generosity, and unwavering commitment to her family, her students, and her faith.
Pat embarked on her educational journey in Kansas City, attending schools in both Missouri and Kansas, as well as in Independence, MO including William Chrisman High School and Central High School, from which she graduated. She pursued further education at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, earning both her Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Education. This academic foundation laid the groundwork for a remarkable 23-year career as a business teacher at Hickman Mills High School, during which she inspired countless students, championing the values of diligence and integrity. She retired in 1998, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in education. She was also an active member of the Missouri National Education Association.
An active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence since 1952, Pat’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She dedicated herself to serving the church in various capacities, including Deacon, Trustee, Elder, and Clerk of Session, and devoted her time to the Bible school and engaging in LOGOS and other church activities. Her warm and welcoming spirit touched the lives of many within the church community.
In her personal life, Pat was known for her kindness and organizational skills, traits that seamlessly carried over into all her endeavors, both at home and in the wider community. She was passionate about volunteer work, especially with Harvesters, remaining devoted even when mobility became an issue, her spirit unwavering. She was an active member of Independence Young Matrons. In addition to her community service, Pat had a zest for life that was evident in her extensive travels, exploring the world with a curious and adventurous heart.
Pat is survived by her son, Bryan Stockton and his wife Tammi; her brother, Rev. Jim Harrington and his wife Teresa; her sister-in-law, Beth Stockton; and her two grandchildren, Kelly and Arizona. She joins in eternal rest her husband, Jim Stockton, her son, Steve Stockton and her parents, who have preceded her in death.
While we mourn the loss of Helen Patricia Stockton, we also celebrate the profound impact she had on all who knew her. Her legacy of kindness, faith, and dedication to education will forever endure in the hearts of her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched throughout her remarkable journey.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, the American Diabetes Association or Harvesters.
