Jerald Dean Ackerman Sr.

December 26, 1939 — January 27, 2025

Jerald Dean Ackerman Sr., beloved father and grandfather, passed away on January 27, 2025, in Independence, Missouri, at the age of 85. Born on December 26, 1939, in McCook County, South Dakota before moving to Cole Camp, Missouri, he was the youngest son of Coygn and Vesta (Strong) Ackerman.

Jerald dedicated over thirty years of his life to serving the community as a dedicated employee at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, where he retired, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment. Before this, he served honorably in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964 as a Damage Controlman, with subsequent service in the Naval Reserve. His time aboard the USS Vermillion and the USS Telfair during critical missions such as the Cuban Missile/Cypress Crisis exemplified his bravery and dedication to his country.

Known for his detail-oriented nature, Jerald had a passionate curiosity about how things worked, often spending hours tinkering with vehicles and taking on home repairs. His affinity for hands-on tasks earned him the title of a “jack of all trades, master of none.” Jerald found joy in woodworking and could often be seen engrossed in documentaries or enjoying a classic western film.

In addition to his impressive career and hobbies, Jerald pursued further education through self-study, earning a locksmithing certificate that highlighted his commitment to lifelong learning.

He is survived by his daughter, Angela (Ackerman) Erwin, and his two grandsons, Seth Ackerman and Jace Ackerman, who will forever remember him for his wit and wisdom.

Jerald reunites in everlasting peace with his beloved wife, Patty Ackerman, and his sons, Scott Ackerman and Jerald Ackerman Jr. He is also preceded in death by his parents and his brothers: Clyde, Lyle, Floyd, Robert, and Donald Ackerman
